Suddenly, Everything Went Black : A short story by James O'Connor (Bl. 1)

The rain belted down relentlessly. The storm was getting worse. Will and Jane were curled up at the stump of an enormous chestnut tree, while Spencer crouched cautiously under a fallen road sign. They were waiting like this for almost ten minutes when Joey and Levi appeared again. "Any luck?" Jane asked, once they were in earshot. "Still no cell service!" Levi panted. "We did spot an old empty house half a mile that way," he added, pointing back up the road.

The moon was peering out from behind the clouds by the time they reached the abandoned house. The place looked like a haunted house from a really cheesy Halloween movie. They scampered up the driveway and took shelter under the porch. Spencer knocked on the door, before deciding the house was empty. Using two hair pins, she managed to pick the lock open. The door creaked on its hinges as they entered.
The stench they were greeted with was unbearably foul. Rats' corpses dotted the hallway to the kitchen, and a rabbit's body lay half-decomposed on the staircase. Joey hurled on the porch and Jane winced, being a vegetarian and all. Levi, Will and Spencer waltzed in and took a left into the living room.
There were two corner sofas in the centre of the room, and an enormous armchair by the fireplace. The ashes in the grate indicated that the fire hadn't been cleared out in quite a long time. The wallpaper was torn in places, and hung off the wall making it too look forlorn. The moonlight that shone in through the enormous front window wouldn't suffice. The first order of business was to get the fire going.
"Joey and Levi, try find some candles," Spencer ordered. "Will and Jane, look for some timber or anything we can use for the fire."
By the time everyone had returned, Spencer had cleared out the fire, dusted down the sofas and laid out some sheets on the floor. Will lit the fire with the timber blocks he had found. He used the rose-gold lighter he always kept on him, though he never smoked. The candles Joey and Levi had found were half burnt out and covered in dust, but they provided enough light to see clearly.
"Anyone up for a game of 'spin the bottle'?" Jane urged, pulling out an empty wine bottle she had found behind one of the sofas. It was such a cliché teenager game, but there wasn't much else to do. "Hey Spence, what did you do with all of the animals? There was enough corpses to fill a graveyard," Will joked. "I didn't touch them," Spencer replied, a little confused. Suddenly, everything went black...
Joey shrieked, and Levi jumped into action. Will checked the candles. They were missing. The fire had gone out and the the only light that remained was the blue hue of moonlight. Jane had leaped into Spencer's arms as soon as the lights went out. She now turned to face Spencer, hoping she was playing a prank. A cold, pale expressionless face looked back at her. Not Spencer. In terms of looks yes, but this person was not Spencer. Their screams could be heard from miles away.
Four days later the bodies of Will Preda, Jane Smith, Joey Cooper and Levi Montgomery were found washed up by the bank of the river, deep down in the gorge behind that house. The M.E.'s report marked their deaths as suspicious but inconclusive. Spencer Wilde's body was never recovered.
